Referenceable! Disk Magnetic Coupler for Industrial Applications
A disk magnetic coupler comprises two circular magnetic hubs that interact to transmit torque. The alternating arrangement of north and south poles on each assembly enables torque transfer without mechanical contact.
There are generally two types of disk magnetic couplers. One is called a “magnetic disk flexible couplings”, while europeans often refer to it as a “disc type magnetic clutch”. The other type is called a “limited distance magnetic disc clutch”.
A double-face magnetic coupler is very straightforward to understand due to its simple structure, which closely aligns with the basic diagram of a disk magnetic coupler.
Limited distance magnetic disc couplings are essentially double-face magnetic couplers with an added metal protective casing. In europe and the united states, these are often referred to as “magnetic gearboxes”. This protective casing effectively prevents injuries during installation, maintenance, and operation of the double-face magnetic coupler.
For double-face magnetic couplers with diameters exceeding 120mm, limited distance magnetic couplers offer enhanced safety due to their protective casing. Therefore, if you require a disk magnetic coupler with a diameter larger than 120mm, I recommend opting for a limited distance magnetic coupler. Due to space limitations, this article only describes the application of the double face magnetic coupler.
How to choose a magnetic disc coupler?
The structure of a disk magnetic coupler primarily consists of a protective cover and magnets.
Regarding the magnet component, the choice of magnet with a larger contact surface is crucial. A larger contact surface between the two disks results in a greater contact area, leading to higher torque efficiency. The following images depict the magnetic structures of two types of disk magnetic couplers, clearly demonstrating the more superior efficiency of CCmagnetics’ disk magnetic couplers.
Since disk magnetic couplers are typically constructed using neodymium iron boron magnets, their standard operating temperature aligns with the temperature range of neodymium iron boron magnets, which is typically between -20°C and 80°C. However, customization disk magnetic couplers utilize samarium cobalt magnets, enabling them to operate at higher temperatures, It’s can be up to 350°C.
Protective cover for magnetic coupler
Regarding the protective cover of disk magnetic couplers, stainless steel 304 and 316 are commonly used materials. However, as a leading manufacturer of disk magnetic couplers, CCmagnetics can also provide PVC-coated disk magnetic couplers.
Let’s compare the differences between these three materials. Stainless steel 304 is the most common material for protective covers and is suitable for most applications. Stainless steel 316, on the other hand, offers superior corrosion resistance. According to Wikipedia, stainless steel 316 can withstand seawater corrosion, making it ideal for applications in the chemical, industrial, and food industries.
PVC-coated disk magnetic couplers manufactured by CC magnetics are specifically designed for use in chemical and acidic environments. In simpler terms, they can be used for stirring in hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid. The image below illustrates the working principle of a disk magnetic coupler used for stirring. If the protective cover of this coupler is replaced with a PVC one, it can effectively stir substances within hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid.
Disk Magnetic Coupler for Industrial Applications
- Disk Magnetic Coupler, with their non-contact and transmittable characteristics, enable stirring while maintaining liquid isolation. Therefore, the most common application is in mixers, which can be used for food mixing and chemical mixing. However, prior to such operations, it is crucial to select appropriate operating temperatures and protective shield materials.
- Turntable type multipoint numerical control drilling and tapping machine, This machine is a rotary multi-point drilling and tapping device. It has a rotating table with multiple work stations. Around this table are several identical machining units, each with a drill/tap. These units can move vertically (Z-axis) and horizontally. The rotating table allows for continuous processing at different stations, increasing efficiency and precision compared to older multi-point machines. Disk Magnetic Coupler is its important part, please see the following figure for demonstration:
- Magnetic disc couplings also play a significant role in transmission devices. They can be used in conjunction with magnetic beval gears, a typical application being the magnetic bevel gear. As shown in the figure below, its bottom part consists of half of a magnetic disc coupling, and the top is a magnetic gear with parallel poles. This structure is widely used in industrial magnetic drive transmission systems.
Liquid Agitation Applications:
Aquariums: Among the diverse applications documented by CCmagnetics, some customers employ magnetic disc couplings in aquariums. A specific example involves connecting multiple aquatic plant growth supports to one side of the butterfly-shaped coupling. This arrangement facilitates water circulation and oxygen generation within the fish tank by the plants, while maintaining the aquarium’s hermetic seal.
Chemical Processing: In chemical research and industrial processes, maintaining homogeneity and preventing solidification of certain hazardous liquids is often critical. Continuous agitation is thus required. PVC magnetic disc couplings offer a robust solution for this purpose, providing reliable, non-contact mixing.
